Lopez picks up win, Tigers use a four-run fifth inning to pull away

JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State used a four-run fifth inning to pull ahead of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and held on for a 6-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory on Friday afternoon at Braddy Field.

Trailing 2-0 through four, Jackson State (25-25, 15-14 SWAC) used a pair of RBI singles to tie the game at 2-all before they forced a decision by Arkansas-Pine Bluff when Tyree Reed went into motion attempting to steal second with Isaac McClenty at third. Reed drew the throw before McClenty took off for home for the double steal, then proceeded to steal third before a throw went into left field for a 4-2 Jackson State lead. The Tigers added two more runs in the sixth, again forcing a defensive miscue from Arkansas-Pine Bluff (23-31, 14-13 SWAC) to grab a 6-4 lead.

The Golden Lions added a pair of runs in the seventh before Jaedeyn Edwards came on for the final two innings to pick up his fifth save - tying him for the conference lead.

Reed finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while being hit by a pitch; while Hederick Torres finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double. Jayden Lopez (6-4) picked up the win, working 7.0 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and five strikeouts. Meanwhile, Edwards went two scoreless innings with one strikeout.
