JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State jumped on top early in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) series finale against Alcorn State on Monday afternoon, and held on for a 6-2 victory to sweep the series.
The Tigers jumped on top 3-0 through the first four innings after an RBI double from Hederick Torres in the second and and RBI single by Tyshon Patty in the fourth inning. After Alcorn State trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Jackson State responded with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning for the win.
Tyree Reed led Jackson State at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, an RBI, and a pair of walks. Derek Arrocha (4-4) picked up the win, working 6.0 innings allowing just four hits with six strikeouts, while Jaedeyn Edwards came on for his third save of the season working the final 2.0 inning and allowed just two hits.
Jackson State (22-23, 12-12 SWAC) now sits five games ahead of Mississippi Valley State for the eighth seed in the conference tournament, and is just one game behind Arkansas-Pine Bluff with six games remaining on the schedule. The Tigers have series against both teams to close out the regular season.

- 7th inning (bottom) - Melendez advanced to second on a passed ball; Edwin Lemus Hudson Jr. advanced to third; Reed scored; Harris singled to third base, advanced to second on a throwing error by 3b, RBI (3-2 KSBBB); Torres advanced to second, advanced to third on the error; Melendez advanced to third, scored on the error, unearned; Hudson scored; Jackson State 6-2.
