JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State women's soccer delivered a dominant performance Sunday afternoon, shutting out Southern University, 3-0, at the JSU Soccer Field in its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener.
The Tigers controlled the match from start to finish, combining a balanced offensive attack with a stout defensive effort to secure their second SWAC victory of the season and improve to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Jackson State broke through late in the opening half when Kianah Farmer found the back of the net in the 39th minute, giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime. Farmer finished the contest with a team-high four shots, including two on goal.
The Tigers continued to apply pressure after the break. Just over four minutes into the second half, Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper doubled the Jackson State lead in the 50th minute, converting a pass from India Wilson to make it 2-0. Hawthorn-Harper recorded three shots and finished with two shots on goal while adding an assist on the Tigers' third goal.
Jackson State added its final goal in the 62nd minute when Akeelah Mirza found the back of the net off an assist from Hawthorn-Harper. Mirza scored on her lone shot of the afternoon, giving the Tigers a commanding 3-0 cushion.
While the offense generated three goals on 20 shots, the Tigers' defense and goalkeeper Taylor Osborn were equally impressive. Osborn recorded six saves and preserved the shutout over all 90 minutes, turning aside three Southern shots in each half.
Jackson State finished the afternoon with a 20-15 advantage in shots and put seven attempts on target compared to six for Southern. The Tigers also held the Jaguars scoreless throughout the match, marking a complete performance on both sides of the ball.
