JACKSON, Miss. | Jackson State turned in its most explosive offensive performance of the young season Sunday afternoon, defeating Delta State, 5-1, at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Tigers controlled the match from the opening whistle, scoring twice in the first half before adding three more goals after the break. Jackson State finished the afternoon with a commanding 29-13 advantage in shots, including a 17-6 edge in shots on goal.
Sarah Portis opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finding the back of the net at the 12:20 mark off an assist from Nahomy Portillo. Less than five minutes later, Ryanne Hawthorn-Harper doubled the advantage with an unassisted goal at 17:11, sending Jackson State into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers wasted little time extending the margin in the second half. Mia Ortega scored at the 50-minute mark off an assist from Hawthorn-Harper to make it 3-0.
Jackson State continued applying pressure throughout the second half, and Karime Antonio-Lopez delivered the Tigers' fourth goal in the 76th minute. Delta State broke through at 79:39 on a goal by Caroline Chandler, but JSU quickly responded.
Ortega capped the scoring with her second goal of the match at the 85-minute mark, finishing an opportunity set up by Nina Kammertoens to secure the 5-1 victory.
Ortega led the Jackson State attack with two goals on four shots, while Hawthorn-Harper finished with a goal and an assist for a team-high three points. Portis and Antonio-Lopez each contributed a goal, while Portillo, Hawthorn-Harper and Kammertoens recorded assists.
In goal, Kianah Farmer played all 90 minutes for Jackson State and collected five saves while allowing just one goal.
