JACKSON, Miss. –
Alandria Smith scored the go-ahead goal at 11:40 in the first half to lead Jackson State past Texas Southern 1-0 Sunday afternoon in a pivotal SWAC match at the JSU Soccer Field.
The Lady Tigers have won two out of their past three matches.
Smith was in the right place in the right time and found space in the top of the box and fired a shot near the right post.
JSU (2-11, 2-3-0 SWAC) kept the pressure on the TSU (3-8-1, 2-3-1 SWAC) throughout the entire match and out-shot its opponent 13-8, including a 6-2 margin in the first half.
Jalah Carter added a game-high six shot attempts, two of reach were on goal.
Carlee Griffiths and
Ivana Setka each added two shot attempts.
Thea Ebbe Brich was stout in goal and finished with four saves to earn the shutout.
The match was very physical and there were 28 total fouls and five yellow cards issued.
JSU returns to the pitch with a pair of road games next weekend. The Lady Tigers are at Grambling on Friday at 4 p.m. and at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at 1 p.m.
