PINE BLUFF, Ark. - The Jackson State Tigers played the spoiler in Dr. Ted Flogaites' return back to UAPB on Sunday, however it was the play on the field that put the Tigers on top for their third straight overall and conference victory in a row.
While the Blue and White were held scoreless in the first 45 minutes of play, JSU came out shooting with a total of 12 shots and eight shots on goal.
The Lady Lions of UAPB were also held scoreless in the first half with just four total shots.
Yet, it was the Tigers that went to Pine Bluff and came out the victor on Senior Day, as Megan Howell put Jackson State on top with an 75th minute goal that ultimately sealed the deal for the visitors as Alexis Henriquez was credited with the assist off of the free kick.
Overall for the match, Jalah Carter and Megan Howell led all Tigers with four shots with Carter having two shots on goal and Howell with the one and only goal of the contest that led to the 1-0 victory. Patricia Calderon had three shots and a team high of three shots on goal.Â
Alexis Henriquez, Pernille Kelm, and Sydni Wilson each collected two or more shots a piece in the contest with Kelm finishing with three shots. Henriquez picked up the assist.
Thea Ebbe Brich played all 90 minutes of action with two saves.Â
The Tigers appear to have found something recently. The team certainly has turned the corner as they have now pitched three straight shutouts and have not allowed a goal in 336 straight minutes. It's the longest shutout streak in recent history for the program (dating back to records that begin in 2015). It is also the first time since September of 2017 that JSU soccer has been above .500 in conference play. They did just that on Sunday, improving to 4-3 in SWAC play.Â
After taking 12 shots in the first half, Jackson State racked up eight more shots in the second half for a season high 20 total shots in the game, including 10 shots on goal.
The win closed out the road schedule for Jackson State as they now turn their attention to the final three home games of the season beginning this Friday at home to Alcorn State.Â
JSU enters the contest with an overall record now of 4-11 and 4-3 in SWAC play. That matchup is set for a 3 p.m. start time.Â
QUOTABLE
COACH DR. TED FLOGAITES
"I thought we were fantastic from start to finish. I thought our used all areas of the pitch and our passing game and movement was nothing short of electric. Full credit to the team for the third consecutive shutout, the defending all over the pitch was sensational. For the game winner Alexis played a peach of a ball in and Howell finished it first time out of the air with a superb volley. What a great service and finish! Sage, Pernille, Ivana and Patti marshaled the middle of the pitch in brilliant fashion. The back line was rock solid and deserve immense credit and right now you can't question our commitment. This is the first time we've been above .500 in the conference since 2017 and we hope to work hard to continue the upward climb.
