ULM Edges Lady Tigers in Hard Fought Matchup


MONROE, La. – The Jackson State Lady Tigers volleyball team kept it close in a loss to UL Monroe on Wednesday night in the Tigers final non-conference match of the season.

The Lady Warhawks took the first two sets of the contest, winning the first set by a score of 25-21 before repeating the same score for the second set, 25-21.

Jackson State held multiple leads over ULM in each of the first two sets, showing that they have what it takes to compete with the best of the best in the collegiate ranks.

Midway through the third set, JSU held a slight 12-10 lead. The Warhawks once again worked from behind, going on a 5-1 run to take a 15-13 advantage over the Jackson State. JSU kept it close all the way to the end, yet fell in the third set 25-20 and 3-0 for the overall match.

Jylen Whitten led Jackson State with 10 total kills, followed by Marina Bianchi Brito with 8 kills.  Camry Dabney added 6 kills while Kanile'a Nomura and Taila Gaines finished with five each. 
Damassy Thompson and Sapphire Simpson had 17 and 10 assists, respectively on the night. Carin Bridges and Jylen Whitten led the Tigers with 12 and 13 digs in the contest.

With the loss, JSU fell to 15-16 overall and 4-13 in non-conference play. The Tigers have been dominate as of late in conference play, going 11-3 in the SWAC which has helped the Blue and White win 12 of it's last 16 matchups. 

Jackson State will resume play on Nov. 7 at home versus Alcorn State beginning at 6:30 p.m.
