Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Jackson State and Alabama A&M combined for 1144 yards of total offense and the Bulldogs edged the Tigers 48-43 Saturday afternoon.
AAMU improves to 6-4 and 3-2 in the SWAC, while Jackson State stands at 4-6 and 3-2 in the conference.
Freshman quarterback
Jalon Jones accounted for 350 yards of total offense and four touchdowns.
The Tigers used their punishing running game to rack up 361 yards on the ground.
Keshawn Harper rushed for 135 yards and a touchdown, while Jones added 130 yards and one touchdown.
On JSU's opening possession Jones capped a four-play, 65-yard drive when he found
Warren Newman on a screen pass and the 5-8, 170-pound jitterbug made multiple AAMU players miss en route for a 33-yard touchdown.
At the 7:59-mark in the second quarter Jones threw a jump ball to
DD Bowie, who won his one-on-one battle with the defensive back and came down with the ball as JSU led 14-10.
After both teams traded field goals, Harper gutted the Bulldogs defense for a 41-yard touchdown run. On the Tigers next offensive possession
Jordan Johnson found a hole and ran for a 51-yard touchdown.
Jones and Bowie connected again at 10:36 in the fourth quarter on a fade route from eight yards out.
Jones capped JSU's scoring with a 51-yard touchdown run at 4:59 in the fourth quarter.
Tyler Rogers and
Elvia Payton each finished with a team-high eight tackles., while
Vincent McIntosh and
CJ Anderson recorded seven tackles.
JSU returns to action next Saturday and plays host to Southern. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. from Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
