Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – Jackson State outscored Southern 15-6 in the fourth quarter and rallied for a 59-52 win in an exciting Southwestern Athletic Conference finish Monday evening.
JSU improves to 10-12 and 6-5 in the SWAC, while SU falls to 11-11 and 8-3 in the conference. It was also the first time since 2012 that JSU has defeated Southern.
The Lady Tigers used a well-balanced offensive attack to secure the win.
Sophomore and Jackson native
Antionette Womack dropped 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field. Womack also was 2-of-2 at the free-throw line and grabbed a pair of rebounds.
Junior
Marneisha Hamer also scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds and handed out three assists. Senior
Christina Ellis added nine points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. The San Diego native also recorded four boards.
JSU played well in front of the rim and grabbed 35 rebounds and outscored SU 22-16 in the paint.
The Lady Tigers also forced the Lady Jaguars into 23 turnovers, which was turned into 22 points. JSU used an efficient offense in the second half and shot 61.6 percent (11-of-18) from the floor and finished the game with a 47.8 percent (22-of-46) shooting percentage.
JSU returns to the court Saturday and plays host to Prairie View A&M at 3 p.m. JSU hosts Texas Southern next Monday for a 5:30 p.m. start.
