Jackson State Fights Past Alabama State to Win Series Opener

JACKSON – Jackson State scored all of its run in the fourth inning and rolled past Alabama State 5-1 in the series opener between the two programs.

The Lady Tigers set the deck in the top of the fourth and loaded the bases.

Freshman Zoey Keyes and junior Kaitlyn Elzie drew back-to-back walks to open a 2-0 lead.

Senior Kelsey Smith then delivered a two RBI single that found its way through the right side and junior Madelyn Prukop singed through the left side to push across the fifth run of the game.

JSU received a strong outing from sophomore Kayla Owens. The Moreno Valley, California native tossed a complete game and scattered six hits, allowed one run, did not walk a batter and struck out three.

Owens also went 2-for-2 in the batter's box, scored a run and walked once.

Junior Yasmin Melero batted 1-for-3 and scored a run.

JSU returns to action tomorrow for a 12 p.m. doubleheader at the JSU Softball Complex.
