MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jackson State started fast and defeated Alabama State 9-6 and ran its winning streak to 15 in a row, which ranks as the longest in NCAA Division I baseball.
Tied at 1-1 to start the top of the fourth, the Tigers used an offensive surge to gain control of match-up.
Dezmond Chumley and
Tyler Culpepper started the scoring in the frame with back-to-back RBI singles.
Wesley Reyes then scored on an error and JSU led 4-1.
Chris Prentiss, coming of a five-RBI night versus Nicholls State, singled down the right field line to score a pair of runs.
Raul Hernandez drew a bases-loaded walk and Chumley was hit by a pitch and JSU opened up an 8-1 lead.
Nikelle Galatas tossed a strong 7.1 innings to earn the win. Galatas allowed 10 hits, five runs and walked a pair of batters and fanned one. However, the sophomore induced 16 pop ups and four ground outs.
Kevin Perez entered in relief and tossed the remaining 1.2 innings and scattered a pair of hits and allowed one run and one walk and struck out two.
Prentiss finished 1-for-5 with two RBI and scored a pair of runs.
Hernandez and Chumley each batted 1-for-4 with two RBI, while Reyes finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.
The two teams meet for game two of the series Saturday at 6 p.m.
