MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jackson State defeated Southern 2-1 and advanced to play Friday in the 2019 SWAC Softball Tournament. With the win, JSU eliminates SU from the tournament.
The Lady Tigers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Kelsey Smith singled up the middle to push across a run and Smith later scored on a throwing error to put JSU up 2-0.
From there,
Kayla Owens subdued the Jaguars lineup. The sophomore tossed a complete game and scattered five hits, allowed a run (unearned) and walked a pair of batters and struck out four. She also induced 10 ground outs.
Kelsey Smith batted 2-for-4 and also scored a run, while
Zoey Keyes went 2-for-2.

Yasmin Melero,
Nava Fisher and Owens each picked up hits.
The Tigers await the loser of Alabama State and Texas Southern, which is scheduled for Friday at noon.
