STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Jackson State volleyball team took on the University of North Florida Friday morning for the final showdown of the Hail State Invitational hosted by Mississippi State University.
A strong showing for the Tigers in losses to Mississippi State and UAB on Thursday in which they fell 3-0 in close sets continued with the match against UNF.
The Tigers put themselves in great position to claim a set one win but UNF pulled away in the final few points to take set one by a final of 25-23, taking a quick 1-0 lead over the Blue and White.
That momentum continued for the Lady Ospreys into the second and third sets of the match as JSU was unable to complete a comeback, falling 25-17 in set two and again in set three, 25-15.
The loss was the twelfth straight match in which JSU was defeated after starting off the season 3-0 at the SWAC/MEAC Tournament.
For the third consecutive match,
Jylen Whitten led all Tigers in kills (11) her third double kills match of the Invitational.
Damassy Thompson and
DeKyra Dennis each had a double assist match in which Thompson led the Blue and White with 13 assists and Dennis behind her with 12 assists.
The matchup with North Florida was the final tune-up match for the Lady Tigers as they get a week off to prepare for the SWAC Western Division Round-Up next Friday-Sunday (Sept. 27-29), versus the likes of Grambling State, Texas Southern, Southern University, Arkansas Pine-Bluff, and Prairie View A&M.
