Lady Tigers Wrap Up Weekend With 6-5 Victory Against Miles College

VICKSBURG, Miss. - The Jackson State Lady Tigers softball team wrapped up the weekend with a 6-5 victory against Miles College, Sunday afternoon.

With the help of a lead off walk in the first, a single by Kaitlyn Elzie, and a triple by Alexis Arredondo, JSU was able to get on board quickly, 2-0.

Moments later, a Kelsey Smith sac fly to right field allowed Arredondo to cross the plate. JSU led 3-0 after one inning.

Miles College got a run back in the second inning, yet the Tigers quickly erased that in fifth as Ariana Cruz scored on an error to extend the lead to 4-1.

With two more insurance runs added in the sixth inning, JSU was able to take a five run advantage headed into the final inning. Miles College made the final inning interesting, putting up a four spot on the board, but JSU was able to hold onto the lead, winning by a final of 6-5.

Kayla Owens was once again lights out in the circle, finishing with six strikeouts, allowing just one run, none of which were earned, just five hits, all in six innings.

Elzie and Arredondo tallied the only two hits of the contest for the Lady Tigers as Arredondo had a triple, two runs batted in, and a run scored.

Cruz was walked twice and came around to score a team-high two times.

The Tigers, with a planned six game weekend, were only able to get five games in as they finished with a 4-1 record with wins over Miles College (2), Kentucky State, and Jarvis Christian.

The Blue and White scored a total of 37 runs in a combined five games to improve to 4-5 overall on the season.

Jackson State returns to the diamond on Friday with matchups versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Central Arkansas in Conway (Ark.).
