Box Score JACKSON, Miss. –Jackson State defeated Alcorn State 4-2 and cliched the series Saturday evening at Smith-Wills Stadium.
Mario Lopez, who was named to the Preseason All-SWAC Team as a reliver, earned the start and kept the Braves off-balance throughout the evening.
Lopez tossed 7 1/3 innings, scattered nine hits and fanned seven batters while only walking one batter.
The Tigers used a big sixth inning to seize control.
CJ Newsome singled through the left side to score
Chris Prentiss and
Equon Smith tripled to deep center field to push across Newsome. Smith later scored on a wild pitch.
Newsome batted 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs, while Smith also finished 2-for-4.
Chandler Dillard and
Jaylyn Williams each collected a hit.
The Tigers were aggressive on the base passes and stole six bases.
Wesley Reyes, Newsome, Smith, Dillard, Williams and Prentiss each swiped a base.
JSU's top half of the lineup batted 6-for-15 with three RBI and scored three runs.
