Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State baseball team utilized a five-run fifth inning to lift themselves to a three-game sweep of Alcorn State Sunday afternoon at Bob Braddy Field.Â
That fifth inning was aided by a three-run towering shot over the left field wall by
Wesley Reyes, giving JSU a 5-3.
Moments later,
Jefrey Rodriguez crushed a fastball onto John R. Lynch Street, well over the 375 sign in left-center field, just two batters later for a two-run home run.Â
The two home runs by Reyes and Rodriquez gave JSU a 7-3 lead as the Tigers took control of the game for the remainder of the contest. Alcorn cut the deficit to just one run in the seventh inning, scoring three runs as JSU clung to a tight 7-6 lead.
Yet in the bottom of the eighth, a
Chris Prentiss double to right field scored
CJ Newsome to the Blue and White a little insurance with an 8-6 advantage. Two batters later, with Prentiss standing at third base, Reyes added his fourth run batted in of the afternoon with a single to right field that, prompting Prentiss to cross for the ninth run of the game.
Devontae Rhodes doubled to right the very next at bat, scoring Reyes as JSU extended it's lead to 10-6.
JSU went on to win
10-6 as they improve to 6-4 overall and 3-0 in SWAC
play
Four Tigers managed multi-hit games with Reyes, Newsome, Prentiss, and
Jaylyn Williams each collecting two hits a piece. Williams and Reyes each had multi runs batted in as Reyes tallied four and Williams with two.
Chandler Dillard had one hit which resulted in a triple. Nick Galatas (1-0) picked up the win, working six innings and only allowing six runs, four of which were earned, while striking out four batters.
Steven Davila picked up the save (1), hia first if the season as he threw 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out four batters.
Jackson State return's to the diamond for a weekday contest on Tuesday versus Louisiana-Monroe beginning at 6 p.m. in Monroe, La.
