JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State pounded out 11 hits and did not commit an error and defeated Florida A&M 10-5 Saturday evening.
JSU, winners of seven out of its past eight games, jumped on FAMU at the bottom of the first inning.
Trailing 1-0, the Tigers were aggressive on the base paths and
Equon Smith stole second base, which allowed
CJ Newsome to score from third and to tie the game at 1-1.
Chandler Dillard,
Jaylyn Williams, and
Chris Prentiss each recorded RBI singles and JSU led 4-1 after the first frame.
JSU added two more runs in the third inning when Prentiss doubled through the left side to score a run and
Torreahno Sweet singled to extend the lead to 6-3.
The Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning. Smith stole home plate and Williams added an RBI single.
Williams batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored one run, while Prentiss finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice. Smith also finished 2-for-3 and stole four bases.
Harry Colon started and earned the win. Colon tossed 2 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and three runs and four walks. He also fanned two batters. From there, JSU used its bullpen the rest of the way.
Brandon Valentine tossed 2.0 innings,
Rauvardo Torres pitched 2 1/3 innings and
Mario Lopez threw the final 2.0 innings.
The two teams complete their three-game series Sunday at 12 p.m.
