JACKSON, Miss. – On March 6, 2020 it was Jaylyn Williams' go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning that proved to be the difference as Jackson State defeated Florida A&M 7-6 in game one of a three game series, one in which the Tigers would ultimately sweep against the Rattlers.
 
JSU improved to 7-5 and FAMU fell to 4-7 on the year.
 
The Tigers jumped on the Rattlers early and led 5-1 after six complete innings.
 
FAMU rallied and managed to take a 6-5 lead in the top half of the seventh.
 
Prior to Williams go-ahead RBI, Chandler Dillard reached base on a bunt single, stole second base and advanced to third base on an error.
 
Dillard, batting third in the lineup, finished 4-for-4 with an RBI, while Equon Smith batted 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
 
Marcus Atterberry, CJ Newsome and Wesley Reyes each collected hits.
 
Anthony Becerra started and was credited with the no decision. The senior tossed 6.0 innings and scattered three hits, allowed four runs and four walks and fanned nine batters.
 
The next day in game two, Jackson State pounded out 11 hits and did not commit an error and defeated Florida A&M 10-5.
 
JSU, winners of seven out of its past eight games, jumped on FAMU at the bottom of the first inning.
 
Trailing 1-0, the Tigers were aggressive on the base paths and Equon Smith stole second base, which allowed CJ Newsome to score from third and to tie the game at 1-1.
 
Chandler Dillard, Jaylyn Williams, and Chris Prentiss each recorded RBI singles and JSU led 4-1 after the first frame.
 
JSU added two more runs in the third inning when Prentiss doubled through the left side to score a run and Torreahno Sweet singled to extend the lead to 6-3.
 
The Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning. Smith stole home plate and Williams added an RBI single.
 
Williams batted 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored one run, while Prentiss finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice. Smith also finished 2-for-3 and stole four bases.
 
Harry Colon started and earned the win. Colon tossed 2 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and three runs and four walks. He also fanned two batters. From there, JSU used its bullpen the rest of the way.
 
Brandon Valentine tossed 2.0 innings, Rauvardo Torres pitched 2 1/3 innings and Mario Lopez threw the final 2.0 innings.
 
The outcome remained the same in the series finale on Sunday, March 8 as Jackson State rolled past Florida A&M 12-6 to complete the series sweep at Braddy Field.

Wesley Reyes used his body – literally – to start the scoring when he was hit by the pitch with the bases loaded.
 
Chris Prentiss singled through the right field to score two runs, while Reyes later scored on a wild pitch. Prentiss and Jefrey Rodriguez scored on a FAMU error and JSU opened an 8-2 advantage.
 
The Tigers also used a big seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
 
Chandler Dillard pushed across a run with a sacrifice fly to left field and CJ Newsome took the advantage of a passed ball to score a run.
 
Reyes capped the scoring with an RBI double to left field.
 
Prentiss batted 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and scored three runs, while Reyes finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Nikelle Galatas, the Preseason SWAC Pitcher of the Year earned the win and improved to 2-0 on the year. Galatas tossed 7.0 innings and scattered 10 hits and allowed six runs and two walks and struck out 11 batters.
