JACKSON, Miss. – Back on October 25-27, 2019, the Jackson State Volleyball program dominated the SWAC Roundup with four straight victories before slipping in the Roundup Finale.
 
October 25, 2019 (Day 1)
Jackson State vs. Grambling State
 
In the Lady Tigers 'opening match of the day, JSU defeated Grambling 25-22, 19-25, 25-17 and 25-15.
 
Freshman Jylen Whitten finished with a game-high 17 kills and 11 digs, while Camry Dabney added 14 kills along with a .355 hitting percentage.
 
Freshman Taila Gaines finished with eight kills and a dominating .571 hitting percentage.
 
Freshman Damassy Thompson directed JSU's offense with 21 assists and Dekyra Dennis added 11 assists and seven digs.
 
As a team, the Lady Tigers finished with a .303 hitting percentage and held GSU to a .189 hitting percentage.
 
Madison Wolfe (.313), Kanile'a Nomura (.375) and Marina Bianchi Brito (.333) each finished with a .300 and above hitting percentage.
 
Jackson State vs. Prairie View A&M
 
JSU dominated PVAMU 25-23, 25-21 and 25-14 to cap the opening day.
 
Whitten shredded the Panthers defense with 12 kills and a .417 hitting percentage. Dabney added 11 kills and a .364 hitting percentage.
 
Nomura contributed with seven kills and a .636 hitting percentage.
 
Thompson guided JSU's offense with 15 assists, while Gaines and Bianchi Brito each added two blocks.
 

October 26, 2019 (Day 2)
Jackson State vs. Texas Southern
 
JSU defeated TSU 25-12, 22-25, 25-20, 17-15 and 15-13.
 
The Lady Tigers used a balanced offensive attack.
 
Freshman Jylen Whitten sported 13 kills to go with eight digs and Camry Dabney added 12 kills.
 
Kanile'a Nomura finished with 10 kills and three blocks, while Taila Gains came through with eight kills and five blocks.
 
Marina Bianchi Brito contributed with seven kills and a pair of blocks.
 
As a team, the Blue and White dominated in front of the net with 15 blocks.
 
Freshman Damassy Thompson finished with a team-high 19 assists, while Dekyra Dennis added 16 assists and eight digs.
 
Jackson State vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff
 
JSU defeated UAPB 25-15, 25-23, 15-25, 23-25, 15-9.
 
Whitten finished with a game-high 18 kills and Dabney chipped in 14 kills to pace the Tigers.
 
Madison Wolf added 12 kills to go with a proficient .391 hitting percentage.
 
Thompson paced the Lady Tigers' offense with 21 assists, while Dennis added 12 assists and Alana Washington chipped in with 10 assists.
 
Bianchi Brito delivered five kills to go with three blocks.


October 27, 2019 (Day 3)

The Jackson State Tigers volleyball team took the first four matches of the 2019 SWAC East Roundup but came up short to Southern University in the final matchup on Sunday afternoon to close out the Roundup.

The Southern Lady Tigers took the first two, winning set one 25-19 before holding off Jackson State in the second set by a score of 25-23 in a close match to take a 2-0 lead.

The JSU Lady appeared to be poised make some noise in the third set, taking an early 4-0 lead before stretching the set out to a 7-3 lead.

SU rolled to four straight points to tie the set up at 7-7 before taking control at 13-10.

Southern continued to push the lead as they sat ahead of the Blue and White by a six point cushion, 23-17.

JSU gained three points back to cut the third set SU lead to 23-19, however the Lady Tigers of Southern earned the final two points to claim the set (25-19) and overall match, 3-0.

NOTABLE STATS
Jylen Whitten had a game high 10 kills, nine digs, three service aces, and 13 points.

Damassy Thompson ended Sunday's matchup with 18 assists and four digs.

Alana Washington closed out the contest with a team high 19 digs

Marina Bianchi Brito and Camry Dabney added seven and six kills apiece while DeKyra Dennis had eight assists.

The Tigers improved to 15-15 (.500) and 11-3 in SWAC play after finishing 4-1 at the Roundup
