JACKSON, MISS. — After the 2021 SWAC Eastern Cluster One, the Jackson State University volleyball program swept their matches against Texas Southern, Univ. of Arkansas- Pine Bluff, and Grambling State. With the wins, Jackson State remain an undefeated 7-0 in the SWAC, and improve the program's overall record to 7-10.
They opened the tournament with a 3-0 rout against the Tigers of Texas Southern, handing them their first SWAC loss of the season. JSU volleyball recording a team hitting percentage of .320 and earning almost 40 kills on 97 total attacks. Alexis Williams led the Tigers with 18 kills, and recorded a hitting percentage of .600 in the opening match. Freshman Trinity Bryant dug out a career-high 18 digs against Texas Southern, as well. The Tigers ended the evening with a primetime matchup against UAPB and won with a final score of 3-1, with the Tigers earning victories in the first, second, and fourth sets. Williams landed 21 kills in the match against UAPB, and Olivia Flanagan also added 12 hits to the Tiger total.
They came back on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Grambling State University. Damassy Thompson led the team with a double-double in the final match of the tournament, accruing 33 assists and 10 digs. Freshman Kennedy Shaw made her first collegiate appearance, and finished the match against Grambling with six kills and a block assist.
Alexis Williams finished the weekend with a total of 55 kills, and will increase her lead as the Southwestern Athletic Conference leader in points scored through the 2021 season.
Volleyball returns to the AAC on the 17th of October as they host Mississippi Valley State at 4 p.m.
