MONTGOMERY, Ala - The Jackson State women's soccer team behind a 52nd minute goal from sophomore
Annalise Brunson, battled the Alabama State Hornets to a 1-1 draw Friday evening at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The lone Tiger goal was a familiar sight, as
Maya-Joy Thompson found Brunson in stride to kick-off the second half.
The goal was Brunson's fifth goal of the season.
"If we had lost the game after conceding a goal in the opening 39 seconds, we would have paid for that all week in training," head coach
Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "But we battled back, Brunson scored a goal from an absurd angle and we were back in business. I thought we mostly bossed the match and outshot them 19-9, but we still lack a cutting edge in the final third. When we sort that piece out and we hope that happens asap, we will be complete."
Down the stretch, neither JSU nor Alabama State were able to manufacture a good chance, as the match went into overtime.
After neither side was able to generate a strong chance in the first overtime period, the two teams went to another 10-minute overtime period.
In the final overtime period, the best scoring chance came in the final 5 minutes of the game off of a corner kick but the Tigers weren't able to find the net.
"It was a match I think we would have lost in 2019 and this year not only did we get back into it, we probably should have won it", Flogaites added. "It was a tempestuous affair in terms of the intensity of the match, the fouls, and the match was on knife's edge. But we did prove again what we have been proving all season: we are very difficult to play against. Sunday will be another stormy match with all sorts of conference implications and that's how it should be, everything on the line in every match. While we have broken our win streak, we do remain unbeaten in four straight contests and that's never easy at this level."
Jackson State will travel to Alabama A&M Sunday, October 24 for another road contest. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
