Tigers Concludes Regular Season With Draw

JACKSON, Miss - The Jackson State soccer team concluded the 2021 regular season on Friday evening with their 3rd shutout of the year after a 0-0 double overtime draw against Southern on senior day.

"I don't want to be the negative guy in the room, but for our level of domination in the match it feels like a loss", head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "To have the match on a silver platter with a breakaway with time running out in regulation and not convert just isn't good enough. We had several clear cut chances to score and at this level we should be burying those chances. I hate that the defense put up a shutout, I don't recall really any dangerous chances the opposition had, and that we didn't translate that shutout into a win."

The result secures JSU with the No. 6 seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament Conference next week, which will be played at Prairie View.

The Tigers (4-11-3, 3-3-3) outshot the Jaguars (5-9-2, 3-5-1) 23-8 on Friday. They put 13 shots on goal to Southern's four and took 13 corner kicks as they put constant pressure on the Jaguars' keeper from the very beginning of the match.

Prior to today's match, the Tigers honored seven seniors who were playing their final home match.

Jackson State had a number of good opportunities including a shot in the final seconds of regulation from senior Rayvn Basinger, but just couldn't get the ball to go their way into the net. They had a lot of near makes that the Southern keeper was forced to make impressive saves on.

"The draws now have the bitter aftertaste, as they do not taste fulfilling in any way, and I think the team would agree with that", Flogaites added. "Now we turn our attention to all or nothing matches and our inefficiency in the attacking third will either get rectified or be the end of us. To be fair to the players this is yet another example in which we have played very, very well but without a result, but producing the result is our responsibility.  I am disappointed we didn't win for our seniors."

The Tigers will return to action next week at the SWAC Tournament which will be held on the campus of Prairie View A&M at the PVAMU Soccer Field beginning Thursday, November 4. Match times are TBA.
