MONTGOMERY, ALA. — Jackson State volleyball increased their win-streak to four games tonight against Alabama State University in the first four-set match of the 2021 SWAC season. The loss puts ASU at 4-13 overall, and marks the first loss against a SWAC team this season.
The first two sets of the match were battles, with JSU taking the first set 25-23, and Alabama State taking the second set by forcing set point twice with a score of 26-24. Jackson State took the tiebreaker with a final score of 25-17, and finished ASU off with a final set score win of 25-15. Alexis Williams finished with a double-double consisting of a career-high 22 kills on 59 total attacks and 16 digs. Setter Damassy Thompson also had a stellar performance against ASU, tallying 37 total assists with only two set errors.
Head coach Rose Washington acknowledged the start her program is off to in 2021 after the match. "This is obviously a good start for us because the teams we went up against are good teams that will be in competition for postseason right up until the very end", said Washington. "I couldn't ask for a better start to the SWAC season as a coach because my team is incredibly focused right now and I'm really proud of how we are playing."
Jackson State will face Texas Southern, UAPB, and Grambling State in the SWAC Eastern Division Cluster One this weekend. "We have our work cut out for us with some solid teams heading to Jackson this weekend.", continued Coach Washington. "Texas Southern is obviously at the top of the division and Grambling and UAPB volleyball are two other solid programs as well. It should be a good weekend of volleyball and we're ready to host on our court."
JSU volleyball is scheduled for a first-serve time at 9:00 am on October 9 against Texas Southern, and will finish the Saturday matches up with a 7:00 p.m. match against UAPB. On Sunday, JSU will play their final match of the Cluster against Grambling at 1:00 p.m.
