RIVERSIDE, Calif - Jackson State fought and battled in Riverside but ended up falling, 75-60, to California Baptist on Tuesday night at the CBU Events Center.
Undersized, undermanned, and not able to regularly hit the outside shots, Jackson State (0-3) still found themselves in the game against a California Baptist (3-0) who was undefeated on the season.
The Tigers played an extremely incredible first half only going into halftime down by four. JSU chipped away with some tenacious defense and was able to take the lead on two different occasions midway through the first half.
"I thought our guys fought hard, but we had some mental breakdowns at the nine minute mark in the second half," head coach Wayne Brent said. "We have to look at the film and try to correct somethings like playing together, offensive rebounding as a team, and not letting the other team go on scoring runs in the last nine minutes of the game."
Graduate student Isaiah Williams was terrific for the Tigers tonight with a game-high 21 points scoring 10 in the first half.
In the second half, California Baptist really started to pound the ball inside going on a 12-0 run to increase their lead to 47-68.
Chance Moore, who finished with 16 points made a couple of three point buckets later on to get the deficit back down to 12, but JSU ran out of steam.
However, the Lancers used their towering size to push their lead back out to double-digits and finish on top, 77-64. JSU suffered their third loss of the season.
Forward Jayveous McKinnis was the third Tiger in double figures. He scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
