VICKSBURG, Miss. – Jackson State softball split a SWAC doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
The game one JSU won 12-4 and the game was called in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule. GSU edged JSU 7-6 in game two.
In the opener
Brianna Simms Johnson provided the offensive spark. Batting from the leadoff spot, Simms Johnson finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and also drew two walks. She also scored a pair of runs.
Isabel Guzman and
Alexis Arredondo each went 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI.
Zoey Keyes and
Kayla Owens both added an RBI.
Macie Kippenbender earned the win in the circle. The junior tossed five innings and scattered six hits, allowed four runs and fanned three batters.
In game two JSU nearly pulled off the comeback. Entering the bottom of the sixth inning GSU led 7-0, but JSU scored six innings to come within one. Neither team was able to score a run in the seventh inning.
Simms Johnson and
Zoey Keyes each added a pair of RBI in the setback.
JSU returns to action this weekend with a series at SWAC foe UAPB.
