JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State Lady Tigers handed Alabama A&M a 5-1 defeat in game one of this weekend's series with the Lady Bulldogs.
JSU struck first with three runs scored in the first inning of play after an
Isabel Gusman double to right field scored
Kayla Owens and
Monica Serrano to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Alexis Arredondo later scored in the inning to give JSU a 3-0 advantage.
A triple in the fourth inning scored Owens in the fourth inning to make the score 4-0. JSU pushed
Samiah Huckabee across the plate later in the fourth inning as JSU took a 5-0 lead heading into the fifth.Â
Jackson State went on to win by a final of 5-1 as
Kayla Owens (6-6) picked up the win in the circle, going 7.0 innings, while allowing only one run on six total hits. Owens also struck out five total hitters.Â
JSU totaled seven hits as a team and were led by Owens and Arredondo with two hits a piece. Gusman, Huckabee, and
Zoey Keyes picked on one hit each while Gusman led JSU with two runs batted in.
The Lady Tigers improved to 11-17 overall on the season and 7-4 in SWAC play with the win. They return to the diamond tomorrow for a double-header matchup with the Lady Bulldogs for games two and three beginning at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the JSU Softball Complex
