ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Jackson State softball team swept Mississippi Valley State by scores of 7-1 in game one and 7-1 in game two, apart of Friday's doubleheader matchup.
In game one Jackson State defeated Mississippi Valley 7-1 on Friday thanks to four runs in the first inning.
Kayla Owens had an RBI triple in the inning to lead the run scoring.
Jackson State got on the board in the first inning when
Isabel Gusman doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs. Owens got the win for Jackson State in the circle as the righty went seven innings, allowing one run on eight hits, striking out seven and walking zero.
As a team, JSU had eight hits in the game. Owens, Brianna Simms-Johnson, and Gusman all had multiple hits for JSU with Gusman, Simms-Johnson, and Owens each collecting two hits to lead JSU.
In game two, Jackson State won by a final of 7-2 to take home the sweep of Mississippi Valley State. Jackson State tallied three runs in the sixth inning with a big inning by
Alexis Arredondo,
Isis Taylor, and
Isabel Gusman, all knocking in runs in the inning.
Macie Kuppenbender led JSU in the circle, getting the win after going seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out three and walking one.
Jackson State racked up nine hits as a team in the contest and were led by
Zoey Keyes and Gusman all had multiple hits for JSU with two hits apiece.
With the sweep, JSU improves to 8-13 overall on the season and 5-2 in SWAC play.
