JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State Lady Tigers split Friday's double-header with Alcorn State, winning game one by a final of 9-8 before falling in game two, 11-7.
Trailing 5-1 in the third inning, JSU put together two runs in the third inning with the help of a
Isabel Gusman two-run home run, before scoring six runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take a 9-5 lead.Â
Alcorn hit a three run home run in the sixth inning, yet
Kayla Owens was able to shut down the Lady Braves in the seventh inning as JSU went on to win game one by a final of 9-8 to even the weekend series up at 1-1.
In game two, Alcorn quickly jumped to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. However, the Lady Tigers utilized a four-run inning of their own to tie the contest up at 4-4 heading into the fourth inning of play.
Once again, in back-to-back innings, Alcorn put together a four spot up on the board to take a an 8-4 lead. Three more runs in the fifth inning for JSU cut the deficit to 8-7, yet four unanswered runs over the remaining innings by the Lady Braves helped seal the game in their favor as they went on to win game two of Friday's double-header by a final of 11-7, as Alcorn took the overall series for the weekend 2-1.
In game one,
Isabel Gusman and
Alexis Arredondo each collected three hits a piece, with Gusman tallying a Lady Tiger best five runs batted in. In game two,
Monica Serrano and
Makayla Caballero each had two hits to lead JSU, with Serrano collecting two runs batted in.Â
With the split, JSU improved to 14-21 overall and 11-6 in SWAC play. JSU returns to the diamond next Wednesday, April 28th versus Southern in Baton Rouge, La. First pitch for the contest is set for 5 p.m. CST.
