JACKSON, Miss - The Jackson State women's soccer team fell 1-0 in double overtime to the Houston Cougars Sunday afternoon.
The teams were even for much of the game, as the Cougars had the advantage with shots on goal and corner kicks, but with the outstanding defensive play from the Lady Tigers the Cougars couldn't ultimately come up with the decisive goal in regulation.
"Of course it's a heartbreaker but we went toe to toe with a very talented team", head coach
Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "Our commitment level was incredible, and exceeded our commitment against Troy, and I didn't think that would be possible."
In net,
Tionna Taylor continued to shine with only one goal allowed in over 99 minutes of play. She recorded seven saves on the afternoon.
The golden goal of the game came in the 100th minute off of the right foot of Houston's Samantha Wiehe.
"Yes, we lost the match but our heart cannot be questioned. Forget our record, we are so much better than our record indicates and there's a nasty element that's creeping into our performances in a good way. We aren't here to be anyone's doormat and I think today we earned more respect. Our back line including the goalkeeper were at an unreal level today. Going forward we need to be far more dangerous in the attacking third to turn the tide in these matches, but having said that we are very proud of this team, and a thank you to everyone who came to support us today", Flogaites explained.
