FLORENCE, Ala - The Jackson State women's soccer team recorded two goals on the evening, including a goal from
Annalise Brunson and an own goal, but came out on the short end of a 3-2 battle to North Alabama Friday night at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
After a major delay in the evening due to inclement weather in the Florence area, the match kicked off about two hours later than the original 7 p.m. start time.
The Lady Tigers scored first in the 19th minute of the first half. Brunson was able to find the top left of the goal and the assist was credited to
Maya-Joy Thompson.
North Alabama answered with multiple goals in the first half. In the 22nd minute, Kira Schuster found the top of the net and in the 36h minute Hope Lensing found the left side of the net to extend their lead to 2-1.
JSU was able to tie the match 2-2 in the 71st minute off of an own goal.
The Lions extended their lead to 3-2 in the 73rd minute on a goal by Charlotte Kellett.
The Lady Tigers were out-shot 21 to 11 in the contest.
JSU's goal keeper
Tionna Taylor had another solid performance recording seven saves for the Lady Tigers.
"First, I hope their kid that got injured is okay. It was a strange match, and in my opinion I feel the match was refereed in a way where we weren't permitted to really compete or defend," head coach
Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "We had eight yellow cards, which I've never seen before and I would argue that we deserved none of them, literally. We scored a good goal and let's just say we had a lot of adversity in the build up, but all in all it was a solid performance. However, our team is good enough that we should be getting results not just competing very well. We know that and we are working hard to find a solution to make us more dangerous while tightening up defensively."
Jackson State will return to action Sunday, September 19 as they travel to Macon, Georgia to take on Mercer for a final non-conference tune up before conference play begins. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
