MACON, Ga - Sydni Wilson's second half goal off of a penalty kick put the Jackson State women's soccer team on the board, but was unable to equalize, falling to Mercer, 2-1, in its non-conference slate finale.
The Bears attempted nine shots to JSU's one before they put one in the back of the net in the 28
th minute, forcing the Lady Tigers to play from behind. Aliah Kitchens netted a goal in 71st minute to extend the lead 2-0.
The Jackson State backline was steady, and the offense began to come to life in the second half.
Mercer outshot Jackson State, 25-4 and had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Tionna Taylor started the match in goal and made eight saves.
"I know we lost, but we matured this weekend, especially today", head coach
Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "Mercer is a very good passing team and we weathered the storm for awhile. My takeaway is that we didn't quit in any minute of the match and when we do that we will always be tough to beat. Listen, we haven't played any Mickey Mouse teams, and that should help our preparation for conference play. For many reasons, I felt this was our best performance in terms of commitment and showing intrinsic drive and desire to not get beat. Nothing is easy at this level, nor should it be. We are amped for conference play against PVAMU this coming Friday, should be a battle royale."
Jackson State will return home Friday, September 24 as they host Prairie View A&M to begin the conference slate. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
