Soccer Defeats Troy In Home Opener For First Time In Program History

JACKSON, Miss - For the first time in program history, the Jackson State women's soccer team defeated Troy 2-1 Thursday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field.

The Lady Tigers scored early in the 15th minute. Maya-Joy Thompson received a beautiful pass from Kyla Sands and shot from the left side of the goal finding the net to take an early 1-0 lead.

Shortly after in the 17th minute, Zigi Ahortor gets a foot on the loose ball and found the net to extend the lead to 2-0.

In the 60th minute, the Trojans scored to close the gap to one (2-1).

JSU recorded eight shots on the day with Annalise Brunson leading the team with three.

Tionna Taylor played all 90 minutes in the net with six saves.

"It's my proudest moment as the coach of this program", head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites said. "I feel as if they overlooked us and we are not the same team they played in 2019. We are a different animal to deal with. Incredible commitment from our players and I'm on them when we aren't good, so today they really deserve praise. In no way could we ask more of them then what they gave the game today. Last time we played them in 2019 we lost 7-0, so we weren't interested in that happening again. You cannot question the effort, passion, and energy we brought to the match and the players have earned this beautiful moment. Now that we know we can do it, we have to go that deep again to continue to honor the jersey and I think we will. I also want to thank Colton and Sariah because I don't do this alone. What they both bring to the table is immense."

The Lady Tigers return to action Sunday as they take on Southern Mississippi for their second home game of the season. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.
