HUNTSVILLE, ALA - Jackson State found itself in yet another close game on the road, but Alabama A&M's go-ahead free throws with 13 seconds left handed the Tigers another narrow defeat in what was a 60-58 decision on Monday night inside the T.M. Elmore Gym.
Jayveous McKinnis paced the Tigers as he was just shy of another double-double with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
The freshman duo
Malachi Wideman and
Coltie Young were huge off the bench for the Tigers. Young finished with 15 points recording three triples followed by Wideman who added 13 points with two triples.
JSU controlled most of the first half as they led for majority of the period. Young recorded 10 of his 15 points in the first half to lead the Tigers. Down the stretch, the Bulldogs were able to put together a small run to end the half with a four point lead, 29-25.
To begin the second half, the Bulldogs carried the momentum over from the first half and started on a 6-0 run jumping out to a 33-27 lead which was its largest lead of the game. The Tigers answered back trading buckets with the Bulldogs as they were able to take a 43-41 lead with seven minutes left to play.
Shortly after that, the lead changed three times in the span of one minute with the Tigers on top 58-57 with a huge three-pointer from
Malachi Wideman under 33 seconds to play. Two free throws by Garrett Hicks was the third lead change, giving Alabama A&M the one-point edge with 13 seconds left, 59-58. The Tigers had one more shot at taking the lead as McKinnis missed a 15-foot jumper that resulted in a jump ball in favor of Alabama A&M. The Bulldogs knocked down a free throw with 0.1 seconds left to seal the 60-58 victory.
