Tigers Fall To Alcorn State In SWAC Opener

JACKSON, MISS - The Jackson State men's basketball fell to Alcorn State 65-50 in their home opener Wednesday evening in SWAC action at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.

Three Tigers finished in double figures with Jonas James III recording a team-high 15 points followed by Jayveous McKinnis who finished with 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds and recording four blocks. Gabe Watson also added 14 points.

"The bottom line is that we didn't play well as a team offensively or defensively," head coach Wayne Brent said. "We haven't played in 15 or 16 days and it showed, but we clean up the mistakes and will be ready for Saturday."

The first half was a very intense back and forth contest between the two teams which resulted in five lead changes and the Tigers only trailed by four going into intermission, 28-24.

JSU (2-10, 0-1 SWAC) opened the second half on a 6-0 run which involved James III and Watson, but Alcorn State (2-11,1-0 SWAC) responded with a 8-0 run to stretch their lead to 45-37 with 12:26 left in the game.

The Tigers pulled to within five, 49-44, on a jumper inside the paint from McKinnis at the eight minute mark in the second half, but the Braves outscored JSU 16-6 the remainder of the game to seal the victory.

Jackson State will return to action Saturday as they travel to Alabama State. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m. CT.
