JACKSON, MISS - The Jackson State men's basketball fell to Alcorn State 65-50 in their home opener Wednesday evening in SWAC action at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.
Three Tigers finished in double figures with
Jonas James III recording a team-high 15 points followed by
Jayveous McKinnis who finished with 14 points while grabbing eight rebounds and recording four blocks.
Gabe Watson also added 14 points.
"The bottom line is that we didn't play well as a team offensively or defensively," head coach
Wayne Brent said. "We haven't played in 15 or 16 days and it showed, but we clean up the mistakes and will be ready for Saturday."
The first half was a very intense back and forth contest between the two teams which resulted in five lead changes and the Tigers only trailed by four going into intermission, 28-24.
JSU (2-10, 0-1 SWAC) opened the second half on a 6-0 run which involved James III and Watson, but Alcorn State (2-11,1-0 SWAC) responded with a 8-0 run to stretch their lead to 45-37 with 12:26 left in the game.
The Tigers pulled to within five, 49-44, on a jumper inside the paint from McKinnis at the eight minute mark in the second half, but the Braves outscored JSU 16-6 the remainder of the game to seal the victory.
Jackson State will return to action Saturday as they travel to Alabama State. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m. CT.

- Jackson State was 18-44 (41 percent) shooting from the field and (13-17) from the charity stripe
- Alcorn State shot 49 percent (24-49) from the field and 73 percent (11-15) from the free-throw line
- The Tigers registered 18 rebounds, including 15 on the defensive glass and three on the offensive glass
- The Braves pulled down 24 rebounds, with 20 coming on the defensive end and four on the offensive end
- JSU finished with 26 points in the paint, seven bench points, nine fast-break points, and 16 second-chance points
- Alcorn registered 25 bench points, 26 points in the paint, five fast-break points, and 11 second-chance points
