JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State University volleyball team hosted Florida A&M Friday evening in a championship rematch at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center. The Tigers fell, 3-1, after sealing an exhilarating first set.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Florida A&M (10-11, 7-0 SWAC) got off to a 6-0 lead with five back-to-back kills
-Jackson State (6-13, 5-2 SWAC) fought back into the game to tie the score at seven as Nevaeh Bray registered the kill
-FAMU was able to capitalize off a Jackson State attack error to take a 15-10 lead
-JSU began to close the gap with a kill from Jylen Whitten as the Tigers trailed by one, 23-22
-A Rattlers' error tied the score at 23, but FAMU took the lead back on the next play as Aja Jones recorded the kill
-A kill from JSU's Olivia Flanagan tied the score again at 24
-Alexis Williams responded with a kill giving the Tigers the upper hand and the 25-24 lead
-Flanagan sealed it for the Tigers, 26-24, with a huge block kill to end the set
-Jackson State opened the second set with a kill from Nevaeh Bray that tied the score at four
-Florida A&M hit the gas taking the 19-10 advantage with a kill from Emerald Jacobs
-The deficit was too large for JSU to come back from as FAMU took the second set 25-15
-Olivia Flanagan opened set three making a statement as she slammed the ball into the ground to put the Tigers on the board first
-The score was tied back and forth for six points until the Rattlers pulled away for the 25-21 third-set win
-The fourth set was tied at 11 as Olivia Flanagan put on down behind the net
-FAMU pulled away taking a 20-13 lead over the Tigers
-Jackson State struggled to come back as FAMU secured the victory in the fourth set, 25-19
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Jackson State finished with 47 kills, 144, total attacks and a .181 hitting percentage
-Olivia Flanagan led the Tigers' offense with 14 kills
-Taila Gaines and Trinity Bryant each registered one ace
-Damassy Thompson recorded 26 assists and 10 digs and Karys Dove had 16 assists
-Alexis Williams had 12 digs and 10 kills in the match
