Tigers Grab an Early Lead to Defeat Bethune-Cookman

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State University volleyball team was able to find its momentum again after taking the first two sets and dropping the third. The Tigers rallied back to defeat Bethune 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 20-25, 25-16) Sunday afternoon at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center in Jackson, Mississippi.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Jackson State (7-13, 6-2 SWAC) stayed in close reach of the Wildcats as set one began tied up at 10

-Bethune-Cookman (4-16, 4-4 SWAC) trailed by six, 20-14, as JSU slowly began to pull away

-The Tigers pushed on to take the first set, 25-17

-BCU got on the board first in the second set as Niara Hightower registered a kill

-Jordan Jones put down a kill to tie the score at seven and put the Tigers back in the game

-BCU's Jaedyn Newman recorded a kill to tie the score again at 9

-Both teams when back and forth tying the score nine times until JSU snuck away with a lead and the 25-22 second set victory

-Bethune-Cookman took a 7-4 to open the third set

-Jackson State never led in set three as the Wildcats scored four points in a row before JSU sided out

-The Tigers struggled to come back from the deficit as BCU stole set three, 25-20

-Alexis Williams put down a kill to score first for the Tigers in set four

-The Tigers took a 17-6 advantage over the Wildcats as Taila Gaines registered a kill

-JSU began to close out after Kennedy Shaw put one down to put the Tigers ahead, 22-13

-The match ended with an attack error from BCU as Jackson State secured the 3-1 victory, 25-16

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

-JSU finished the day with 51 kills, 124 total attacks and a .250 hitting percentage

-Alexis Williams registered 19 kills, 14 digs and an ace

-Karys Dove listed 24 assists

-Damassy Thompson recorded 20 assists and an ace

-Taila Gaines had four blocks including two solo on the day

UP NEXT

The Tigers will travel to Huntsville to take on Alabama A&M Sunday. First serve is set for 4 p.m. at Elmore Gymnasium.
