Jackson State falls 85-79 to Tulsa

TULSA, OK --The Jackson State men's basketball team got a 26-point performance from the bench, but fell 85-79 to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on the road Saturday.

The Tigers (0-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Trace Young, who put together a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Ken Evans added 15 points and two steals and Jayme Mitchell helped out with 12 points from the bench.

Young pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace the Jackson State offense which grabbed 16 boards and turned them into 18 second chance points.

The Jackson State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 15 Tulsa turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the offensive end of the floor. Zeke Cook led the way individually for the Tigers with three steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 27-17, Jackson State went on a 6-0 run with 7:28 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Mitchell, to narrow its deficit to 27-23. The Tigers continued to close the gap, cutting the Tulsa lead to 37-34 by the end of the first half.

Tulsa kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 73-59 advantage before Jackson State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Romelle Mansel's layup, to shrink the deficit to 73-66 with 3:51 to go in the contest. The Tigers kept their comeback going, holding the lead with 16:19 left to play, but Tulsa managed to hold on for the 85-79 win. Jackson State capitalized on nine Tulsa turnovers in the period, collecting 17 points off those turnovers.
