LUBBOCK, Texas| The Jackson State women's basketball team closed out the WNIT cruising past Louisiana-Lafayette in a 70-41 victory Wednesday evening at United Supermarkets Arena.
Daja Woodard led the Tigers with nine points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Hayleigh Breland added nine points and two steals off of the bench and Angel Jackson added nine points and two blocks.
Jackson State (2-2) out-rebounded Louisiana 47-36 in Wednesday's game, paced by Woodard's 10 boards. The Tigers also pulled down 12 offensive rebounds and scored eight second chance points.
The Jackson State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 17 Louisiana turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the offensive end of the floor. Liz Martino led the way individually for the Tigers with three steals.
How It Happened
·After falling behind 10-9, Jackson State went on a 7-0 run with 2:29 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Areyanna Hunter, to take a 16-10 lead.
· The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-12 advantage.
· Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points.
· Jackson State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 7:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Breland, to increase its lead to 26-14.
· JSU held onto its lead for the remainder of the period taking a 28-16 advantage into halftime.
· Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 12 points close to the basket.
· The Tigers continued to preserve the halftime lead before going on an 11-0 run to expand its lead further to 43-20 with 4:21 to go in the third.
· The blue and white held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 50-27 edge.
· Jackson State took advantage of four Louisiana turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.
· JSU kept its lead before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Alexis Roberts' layup, to grow the lead to 70-41 with 14 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
· Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 20 points in the paint.
Inside the Numbers
· The Tigers held the Ragin' Cajuns to only 23 percent shooting from the field.
· JSU never trailed after taking a 16-12 first quarter lead.
· Jackson State recorded 16 total assists in the game.
· Jackson State had a stellar day defensively, holding Louisiana to 13 percent from beyond the arc on 15 attempts.
· JSU's bench made an impact by scoring 43 points to its scoring output.
· Jackson State had a 47-36 edge on the boards in the win.
· The JSU defense forced 17 turnovers throughout the game.
· The Tigers were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording eight blocks as a team.
· Jackson State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 12 offensive boards in the game.
· Hayleigh Breland and Angel Jackson led the Tigers with nine points each.
· Jackson State got a game-high 10 rebounds from Daja Woodard.
