LOS ANGELES, Calif.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 19-point performance from the bench, but fell 72-60 to the UCLA Bruins on the road Friday.
Jackson State (2-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Ti'lan Boler, who secured a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Angel Jackson added 10 points and two blocks and Jariyah Covington helped out with 10 points and four assists off the bench.
Boler pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 17 second chance points.
Jackson State forced 16 UCLA turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Friday's game. The Lady Tigers turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Liz Martino's three steals led the way for Jackson State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 27-14, Jackson State went on a 7-0 run with 2:42 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Covington, to narrow its deficit to 27-21, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
Jackson State then started off the second quarter by going on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 27-26. UCLA responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Lady Tigers trailing 43-35 heading into halftime.
UCLA continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 49-36 advantage before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 49-42 with 5:03 to go in the third. UCLA countered and stretched its lead to 59-46 heading into the fourth. Jackson State took advantage of three UCLA turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.
Jackson State came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Daphane White's layup, to shrink the deficit to 59-55 with 5:46 to go in the contest. UCLA responded and outscored the Lady Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 72-60. Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 14 points in the paint.
