JACKSON, Miss.| Liz Martino nailed a dagger 3-pointer with 1:16 left in the game to put Jackson State up 58-49, and the Lady Tigers earned a 60-51 win against the SE Louisiana Lions at home Friday.
Martino led the Lady Tigers (3-7) with 16 points and two steals. Angel Jackson tacked on nine points and 10 rebounds and Daja Woodard chipped in as well with eight points off of the bench.
Jackson State grabbed 34 rebounds in Friday's game compared to SE Louisiana's 22, led by Jackson's 10 boards.
Jackson State's defense held SE Louisiana to only 30.8 percent shooting from the field, including 25 percent from beyond the arc. The Lady Tigers also limited Hailey Giaratano to 3-of-14 shooting and 10 points in the game. The Lions did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed four second chance points while Jackson State cleared 27 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
Jackson State started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Jackson, to take an early lead with 9:13 left in the first quarter. The Lady Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-15 advantage. Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 16 points close to the basket.
The Lady Tigers used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 28-23 edge. Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.
Jackson State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jackson, to expand its lead further to 44-35 with 42 seconds to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lions had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Lady Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 44-38 edge. Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
The Lady Tigers coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Lions 16-13 in the fourth quarter. Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring four of its 16 total points.
