Young, Young combine to score 46, Jackson State takes down SMU 69-68

DALLAS, TX --Trace Young scored 28 points and Coltie Young added 18 more, combining to score 46 of Jackson State's 69 total points as the Tigers knocked off the SMU Mustangs 69-68 on the road Saturday.

Trace Young led the Tigers (1-6) with 28 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks. Coltie Young added 18 points and seven rebounds and Zeke Cook chipped in as well with 10 points and six rebounds.

Jackson State collected 40 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to SMU's 31, led by Trace Young's eight boards.

Jackson State did a great job disrupting SMU shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Romelle Mansel's four rejections led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

After playing to a 22-22 tie, Jackson State went on a 5-0 run with 3:26 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Trace Young, to take a 27-22 lead. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 30-28 advantage. Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 30 points.

SMU proceeded to take a 39-38 lead before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Coltie Young's three, to seize a 44-39 lead with 12:37 to go in the contest. The Mustangs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still held on for the 69-68 win. Jackson State shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting six shots from deep to score 18 of its 39 points.
