The Jackson State University Tigers won their third straight game on Saturday night, turning a 28-28 halftime score into a four-point, 60-56, victory over the Florida A&M Rattlers at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
JSU's win was a significant one, coming over the No. 2-ranked team in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
JSU, 7-16 overall and 5-7 in the SWAC, found themselves down by nine at 16-7 midway through the opening half but outscored the Rattlers 21 to 12 to account for the 28-all tie at intermission. The Tigers' spurt was keyed by five straight points from graduate guard
Dyllan Taylor, who finished the game with six.
In the second half, FAMU (10-13, 8-4 SWAC) built up a six-point lead when senior guard M.J. Randolph hit a jump shot outside the paint, giving the Rattlers a 49-43 lead with 11:14 to play. But the Tigers proceeded to go on a 7 to 0 run, gaining their first lead of the second half at 50-49 on a layup by junior forward
Terence Lewis II at the 8:06 mark.
From there, the Rattlers could only manage brief one-point leads in the contest, the last coming with 3:48 to play on a jump shot by graduate guard Bryce Moragne. That give his team a 54-53 lead.
Neither team could buy a basket over the next two minutes and 44 seconds, but when JSU's Lewis connected on a layup in the paint with 1:03 remaining, giving the Tigers a 55-54 lead, JSU would never trail again, holding on for their four-point victory.
Two players scored in double-figures for the Tigers, including Lewis, who had a near double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds, along with senior guard Jonas James, who tallied 17 points.
Jackson State will host Bethune-Cookman on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
