The Jackson State University Tigers made it four wins in a row on Monday with a 71-51 victory over Bethune-Cookman University in a Southwestern Athletic Conference contest at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
The Tigers' longest winning streak of the season has improved the record to 8-16 overall, and increased its conference record to 6-7 with the win.
"I thought we played well together," said JSU head coach
Wayne Brent. "The guys shared the ball and we had a high number of assists. It was a great team effort on offense and defense."
The teams traded baskets through the first six minutes of the contest, but when senior guard
Jonas James III scored on a layup at the 10:31 mark of the opening half, giving the Tigers a 10-8 lead, they never looked back.
Jackson State led by 16 points at the half, 36-20.
In the second half, the Tigers methodically built up a lead of as many as 23 points, that margin coming when junior
Terence Lewis II hit a 3-point jump shot with 7:46 left, giving JSU a 53-35 lead. The Wildcats would get no closer than 18 thereafter.
Jackson State shot 58.8 percent from the field and 47.4 percent from 3-point range, while holding B-CU to just 34.4 percent shooting.
For the game, the Tigers were led by redshirt freshman guard Ken Evans, who had game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman guard
Coltie Young contributed 14 points off the bench.
Jackson State will travel to Lorman, Miss. on Saturday for a 3 p.m. date with rival Alcorn State at the Davey L. Whitney HPER Complex.
"Alcorn is a solid team and they're well-coached," said Brent, "It'll be a tough environment. They're one of the teams at the top of the league. They're a good, solid team."
