ITTA BENA, MISS - Despite having five different players inactive for Saturday's contest, the Jackson State men's basketball team seized the opportunity and pulled off a 69-65 win in which was a monster outing from
Terence Lewis II who led the team with 28 points and 10 rebounds.
Jamarcus Jones recorded his first double-double on the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Jonas James III finished with 10 points and eight assists followed by
Ken Evans Jr. who chipped in 8 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds.
JSU (5-16, 3-7 SWAC) got out to an early 12-4 lead with two early three pointers from
Darrian Wilson during that stretch. Mississippi Valley (1-19, 1-9 SWAC) countered back with a 6-0 run to bring the game within two, 14-12. Adding to the offense in the stanza was Lewis II who scored eight points through the first 20 minutes of action, helping the Tigers stay within striking distance headed into intermission, 26-29.
In the second half there were seven lead changes, but it was Lewis II who was a force to be reckoned with filling up the basket. He scored 20 of his 28 points in the second stanza finishing with a game-high.
JSU played some of its best basketball of the night during a four-minute stretch to build a six-point lead, its largest lead of the second half, 49-43. The duo, Lewis II and James III, combined to scored the final 16 points for the Tigers. With 11 seconds left to play, senior point guard James III hit the dagger with a pull-up jumper. A hectic final 60 seconds ensued though with MVSU having a chance to send it into overtime on the last possession, but a missed layup from Kadar Waller, a defensive rebound from Jones, and two free throws from Lewis II sealed the team's first conference road win of the season.
