PINE BLUFF, Ark. – The Jackson State University baseball team swept both ends of Sunday's doubleheader, winning 12-1 in seven innings and 5-4 at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex.
JSU will play a two-game midweek series at Georgia Tech beginning Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Game 1 - Tigers 12, UAPB 1: JSU took game one behind a 13-hit attack. Jackson State scored in each of the first six innings and, leading 4-1 after three innings, broke the game open with a five-run fourth.
Caleb Evans Jr. was hit by a pitch and scored ahead of Chevalier Dorris, who reached on an error and both players scored on a second error on the play. After
Jatavis Melton reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
Ty Hill then tripled to right center, scoring Melton for a 7-1 lead. Riley's infield single scored Hill. With two outs,
Devontae Rhodes singled to right, scoring Riley for a 9-1 lead.
Hill went 4-for-5 and scored three runs in the win. Riley, Evans, and Dorris each had two hits, with Riley also driving in three runs in the win.
On the mound,
Erick Gonzales got the complete-game win, allowing only two hits and a run, walking three and striking out seven.
Game 2 – Tigers 5, UAPB 4: Trailing 4-0 after six innings, JSU scored four runs in the seventh and the winning run in the ninth.
Dorris walked to lead off the inning, Melton singled to short, and
Colby Guy walked to load the bases. With one out, Riley doubled to center field, scoring Dorris and Melton.
Jaelen Williams then singled to center, scoring Guy and Riley to tie score at 4-all.
In the ninth, Hill doubled to left field to lead off the inning and scored on a double to left by
Omar Gomez-Rivera.
Guy got the win on the mound in relief, pitching 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed only three hits, walked one, and struck out three.
