The Jackson State University baseball team used a trio of big innings to roll past Tougaloo 19-5 Wednesday night at Braddy Field.
A season-high run total was sparked by
Jatavis Melton, who went 3-for-3 with four runs scored to lead a season-high 17 hit-attack.
Ty Hill went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and two runs scored.
Caleb Evans went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, and
Omar Gomez-Rivera went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Leading 1-0 in the second inning, a five-run second gave Jackson State (11-10) a comfortable margin. With one out,
Colby Guy was hit by a pitch, stole second, and moved to third on a bunt single by
Marshal Luiz. Gomez-Rivera then executed a bunt single up the first base line, scoring Guy. After Melton walked to load the bases,
Devontae Rhodes' single up the middle scored Luiz and Gomez-Rivera for a 4-0 JSU lead. Following an RBI groundout by Hill that scored Melton, Rhodes scored on a wild pitch to give Jackson State a 6-0 lead.
After Tougaloo scored a run in the top of the third, a seven-run JSU third broke the game wide open. With one out
Caleb Evans was hit by a pitch. Guy singled, and Luiz walked to load the bases. Gomez-Rivera then doubled down the left field line, scoring Evans and Guy for an 8-0 lead. Luiz then scored on a passed ball before Melton's single to left scored Gomez-Rivera for a 10-1 lead. A walk to Rhodes and an infield single by Hill loaded the bases, before a sacrifice fly by Williams scored Melton. Riley then singled to third to reload the bases before RBI walks to Evans and Guy scored Rhodes and Hill, respectively to give the Tigers a 13-1 lead.
The Tigers return to SWAC play Friday at 2 p.m. in game one of a weekend series at Alabama A&M.
