HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Jackson State University baseball team posted a 10-6 win Saturday at Alabama A&M in two of the Southwestern Athletic Conference series.
Jatavis Melton had three hits, drove in three runs, and scored a run of his own as JSU (12-11 overall, 1-4 SWAC) posted its first conference win.
Ty Hill (2-4, 2R, RBI),
El'Rico Riley (2-5, R), and
Asher Akridge (2-5, RBI, R) each had two hits in the 15-hit attack as the Tigers rallied from a 5-4 deficit after six innings.
In the seventh, Devonte Rhodes singled to left to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a Hill double through the left side.
Jaelen Williams then reached on an error, scoring
Rhodes to tie the score. With two outs, Hill scored on a wild pitch to give Jackson State the lead for good at 6-5.
In the eighth, a one out single by Melton scored pinch-runner
Keyshawn Mays to give the Tigers a 7-5 lead.
A three-run ninth extended the lead for Jackson State. Riley doubled to right to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a
Chevalier Dorris Jr. infield single. Akridge then singled through the left side, scoring Riley for an 8-5 lead as Dorris moved to third.
Omar Gomez-Rivera reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Dorris with the ninth JSU run. On a double steal, Akridge stole home with the Tigers' final run as Gomez-Rivera took second.
Freshman Erick Gonzalez (3-2) earned the win, yielding eight hits and five runs, walking one and striking out a season-high nine batters.
Jackson State will go for the series win Sunday at 1 p.m.
