Baseball's Late-Game Rally Falls Short

The Jackson State University baseball team's late game-rally came up short in losing 9-7 to Alabama A&M in the series finale Sunday at Braddy Field.

Trailing 9-5 in the ninth, the Tigers rallied with two outs. Devontae Rhodes singled to second base, and scored on a Ty Hill double to left field. After Hill stole third, he scored on Caleb Evans' singled to left but JSU could get no closer.

Hill's three-hit game (with one run scored and one RBI) led the Tigers at the plate. Rhodes (two runs, one RBI), Evans (one RBI), and Jatavis Melton (two RBI) each had two hits for JSU.

For the third straight game, Jackson State scored single runs in each of the first two innings. Rhodes scored on a fielder's choice grounder for a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Chevalier Dorris Jr. tripled down the right field line and scored on a safety squeeze bunt by Jefrey Rodriguez to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

After Alabama A&M took a 4-2 lead in the sixth, Jackson State rallied with a three-run seventh. Marcus Atterberry doubled to left center to lead off the inning, Dorris was hit by a pitch, and Rodriguez reached on a bunt single to load the bases. With one out, Jatavis Melton singled to left center scoring Atterberry and Dorris to tie the score. Rhodes followed with a single to left center, scoring Rodriguez to give Jackson State a 5-4 lead.

However, AAMU scored three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth before the late JSU rally.

Jackson State returns to action Tuesday at Grambling in a non-conference game at 6 p.m.
