Volleyball Drops Two at Blazer Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.| The Jackson State University women's volleyball team dropped both of its matches on day one of the Blazer Invitational at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Tigers fell to Little Rock, 3-1, and UAB, 3-0
 
GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Little Rock (2-2) opened set one taking a 14-7 lead over the Tigers
-Jackson State (1-4) cut the deficit to half, 22-11, as Little Rock held on to its lead
-The Tigers couldn't hang on as Little Rock took the first set, 25-14
-JSU played the Trojans closer in the second set as the Tigers trailed 13-10
-Jackson State battled back to tie the score at 18 with a kill from Alexis Williams
-JSU tied the score again at 20 as Jylen Whitten came up with a huge kill for the Tigers
-Little Rock inched away 
leaving the Tigers behind as they stole the second set, 25-21
-JSU opened the third set with an 11-6 lead
-Little Rock tied the set at 13 as Nedima Kamberovic put on down
-Both teams went point for point before Jackson State was able to sneak away with the 25-23 third-set victory
-Little Rock started the fourth set with a 7-1 lead over Jackson State
-The Tigers never recovered from the large deficit as the Trojans sealed the 3-1 victory, 25-14
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Alexis Williams and Jordan Jones each recorded 13 kills for JSU while Jylen Whitten listed nine
-Damassy Thompson, Alana Washington and Nevaeh Bray each had one ace
-Bray also recorded seven blocks
-Thompson recorded 21 assists and Karys Dove registered 15 assists
-Washington had 15 digs for JSU while Williams followed with 11 and Trinity Bryant with nine
 
GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Jackson State (1-5) opened game two playing UAB neck and neck tying the score eight times in the first 10 points
-Out of those 10 points, JSU led five times
-The University of Alabama at Birmingham (2-2) took a 21-18 lead over JSU
-The Tigers battled back for the top spot as Jordan Jones recorded a kill on the next play making the score 21-19
-An error committed by the Blazers put JSU within one of UAB, 21-20
-UAB snuck off with the first set win, 25-21
-JSU opened the second set with another close effort trailing UAB by one at the halfway point, 13-12
-UAB began to pull away from the Tigers 19-13
-JSU never recovered as UAB got away with the 25-16 second set victory
-A kill by Olivia Flanagan put JSU on the board first in the third set
-The Tigers led UAB 8-5 as the team recorded an ace
-The Blazers fought back to tie the score at 11 with an ace of their own
-UAB took a 17-14 lead over JSU as Rackel Maia registered a kill
-JSU was able to score only five more points as UAB claimed the 3-0 sweep, 25-19
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
-Jordan Jones led the JSU offense with 10 kills
-Damassy Thompson, Nevaeh Bray and Karys Dove each recorded an ace
-Bray registered four blocks while Jones registered three
-Thompson finished with 15 assists followed by Dove with six
-Trinity Bryant listed 10 digs for the Tigers
 
UP NEXT
-The Tigers continue their run at the Blazer Invitational as they close out the tournament with a matchup against Samford. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
