HOUSTON, Texas| The Jackson State women's basketball team scored 31 points off of turnovers on the way to an 87-58 win over Texas Southern on the road Monday evening.
Jackson State (7-8, 4-1 SWAC) had four players score in double figures, led by Daphane White, who notched a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. White also added three steals to her stat line. Angel Jackson tacked on 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks off of the bench and Jariyah Covington chipped in as well with 11 points.
Led by White's five offensive rebounds, Jackson State dominated by crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense caused its share of mistakes in Monday's game, forcing 20 Texas Southern turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 31 points on the other end of the floor. Areyanna Hunter led the way individually for the Lady Tigers with three steals.
How It Happened
- After falling behind 9-7, Jackson State went on an 8-0 run with 5:27 left in the first quarter to take a 15-9 lead.
- JSU lost some of that lead but still entered the quarter break with a 22-18 advantage.
- Jackson State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 22 points.
- Jackson State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 15-0 run starting at the 5:23 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Covington, to increase its lead to 41-22.
- The Tigers proceeded to tack on two points to that lead and enjoyed a 46-25 advantage heading into halftime.
- Following the half, Jackson State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 54-32 before going on a 19-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jackson, to expand its lead further to 73-32 with 1:51 to go in the third.
- Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Tigers had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 73-40 edge.
- Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 27 points in the paint.
- Jackson State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Keshuna Luckett's three, to grow the lead to 78-40 with 6:43 to go in the contest.
- The Tigers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 87-58 win.
